Cheap RAM - choose the amount and type of memory for your computer

When you decide how much RAM your computer will have, I advice against going lower than 256 megabytes. If your computer does not have enough RAM, it will go on using your hard drive as a substitute for RAM which will make your computer quite slow. This is due to the fact that the response times are higher for hard drives than for RAM. It really does make sense; your hard drive is made for storing information on the long term, while the information store in the RAM is more volatile in nature and gets access more frequently. If you choose a motherboard with an on-board graphics card, a part of your ram (normally 16 to 64 megabytes) will be reserved for your graphics card. If you choose a stand-alone graphics card, it will have a RAM on it that is dedicated to itself. The more applications the computer is running the greater the need for RAM. DDR (Dual Data Read?) RAM (and later DDR2 RAM) is faster than traditional SD RAM (Single Density?). The price on SD RAM has changed very little for a long while, and DDR RAM is not that much more expensive, so you should be looking for this type for your computer.
